The construction of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) Southern Region Secretariat has received a major boost following a generous donation of 1,000 bags of cement from the First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio.

The donation was announced during the official sod-turning ceremony held on Sunday, April 26, 2026, in Bo City, marking the commencement of the long-awaited project.

Delivering her keynote address, Dr. Bio expressed pride in supporting what she described as a “worthy national initiative.” She assured the SLAJ leadership of her commitment and pledged to collaborate with the association’s executive to mobilize additional resources by engaging partners, stakeholders, and well-meaning individuals to ensure the successful completion of the project.

She noted that the 1,000 bags of cement represent an initial contribution and encouraged the SLAJ executive to organize a comprehensive fundraising drive to attract broader support.

“I am honoured to have been invited to turn the sod today. I will begin with 1,000 bags of cement as my initial support, and I will work with the executive to plan a fundraising programme for this important project,” she stated.

Highlighting her personal connection to the profession, the First Lady revealed that she is a trained journalist from the London School of Communication.

She underscored the critical role of journalism in democratic governance, stressing that a strong and independent media is indispensable to national development.

“Journalism is not a luxury but a necessity. Without a vibrant and independent press, transparency, accountability, and public trust are weakened. Journalists serve as watchdogs, promote national dialogue, and help safeguard human rights,” she emphasized.

Dr. Bio further noted that true leadership involves investing in institutions that empower citizens and strengthen democratic values.

In his remarks, SLAJ Southern Region Chairman, Abubakarr Mustapha, described the project as a landmark achievement for the region. He disclosed that upon completion, the secretariat will serve as a multipurpose facility featuring modern office spaces, a guesthouse, a car park, and an improved working environment for journalists.

“This is a dream come true. It formed a key part of my campaign promises during my second term, and I am delighted that we are taking this bold step today,” he said.

He commended the Eastern Region of SLAJ for successfully completing a similar project and expressed confidence that the Southern Region could replicate the achievement. He called on members, stakeholders, and the general public to contribute towards the project, emphasizing that every contribution counts.

Chairman Mustapha expressed profound appreciation to the First Lady for her timely intervention. He also acknowledged the contribution of goodwill ambassador Joseph Maada Kpulun, who earlier donated 500 bags of cement and facilitated the engagement of a project engineer.

Also speaking at the ceremony, SLAJ National President, Alhaji Manika Kamara, commended the regional executive for the initiative and lauded the First Lady for her continued support to the media sector.

He reaffirmed the non-political nature of the project, emphasizing the association’s independence and commitment to its watchdog role.

“SLAJ remains committed to its core values. While we receive support from the government, we have consistently upheld our responsibility to hold authorities accountable,” he noted.

He assured the Southern Region of the full backing of the national executive and encouraged continued collaboration with partners and stakeholders.

The ceremony attracted a wide range of dignitaries, including the Regent Chief of Kakua Chiefdom, Chief Boyzie Lemoh; Executive Secretary of the Independent Media Commission, Kallil Kallon; Chairman of the Civil Society Forum in Bo District, Joseph Dominic Blackie; Members of Parliament; religious leaders; and the Mayor of Kenema City, Thomas Karimu Baio, among others.

The event concluded with the official turning of the sod and the unveiling of the project signpost, symbolizing the formal commencement of construction work on the SLAJ Southern Region Secretariat.
