UNICEF has presented its latest Progress and Promise publication to H.E. Ambassador Zhao Yong, highlighting the progress made in improving child health and wellbeing in Sierra Leone while underscoring the importance of sustained partnerships in advancing maternal, newborn, and child healthcare.

The presentation spotlighted achievements made for every child in Sierra Leone, particularly in the areas of maternal, newborn, and child health. The publication outlines how targeted interventions, expanded access to healthcare services, and strengthened community health systems have contributed to improved outcomes for children across the country.

UNICEF officials emphasized that although significant progress has been achieved, sustained investment and continued collaboration remain essential to consolidating these gains and addressing remaining challenges.

The engagement with the Chinese Embassy forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation and mobilize support for child-focused health and development programmes in Sierra Leone.

Receiving the publication on behalf of the People’s Republic of China, Ambassador Zhao Yong reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s national development priorities.

The longstanding partnership between China and Sierra Leone has included cooperation in health, education, and infrastructure development, with increasing focus on strengthening healthcare systems and improving service delivery for vulnerable populations.

UNICEF further noted that continued collaboration with government institutions and international partners is critical to reducing neonatal and child mortality, expanding immunization coverage, and ensuring that every child has access to quality healthcare from birth.

The organization stressed that progress must remain inclusive and equitable, particularly for children and families in underserved and marginalized communities.

The Progress and Promise report serves both as a record of achievements and a call to action, urging stakeholders to maintain momentum and address existing gaps in child health and survival.

Both parties expressed optimism that their shared commitment to children’s wellbeing will translate into stronger programmes, increased resource mobilization, and lasting impact for families across Sierra Leone.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to advancing the agenda of “progress for every child” through evidence-based solutions, innovation, and strengthened partnerships.
