Sierra Leone and Senegal have signed a bilateral cooperation treaty on mining and energy, marking a new phase in economic collaboration between the two West African nations.

The agreement was witnessed by Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio and Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye during an official engagement in Dakar. Officials described the treaty as a strategic milestone aimed at deepening bilateral relations and expanding opportunities in the extractive and energy sectors.

The treaty establishes a framework for joint initiatives in mineral resource development, energy infrastructure, and technical cooperation. It is expected to facilitate knowledge exchange, attract investment partnerships, and promote regulatory alignment to support the sustainable exploitation of natural resources while strengthening energy security across the subregion.

For Sierra Leone, the agreement supports ongoing efforts to diversify the economy and attract responsible investment into its mining sector, which includes iron ore, rutile, and bauxite. Senegal, with its expanding energy portfolio and offshore gas projects, presents opportunities for complementary collaboration in power generation and potential cross-border energy supply.

Both governments stated that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to leveraging natural resources as a driver of economic growth and regional integration. The treaty is also expected to promote capacity building and skills transfer, ensuring that local communities benefit through job creation and technology adoption.

The signing comes amid broader regional discussions within Economic Community of West African States, where energy interconnectivity and resource management have become priority areas. By aligning policies and sharing expertise, the two countries aim to position themselves as competitive players in Africa’s extractive and energy landscape.

Officials noted that the treaty will serve as a framework for future agreements, supported by follow-up mechanisms to monitor implementation and identify concrete projects. The move signals a shift toward more structured economic diplomacy between Sierra Leone and Senegal, focused on mutual benefit and long-term resilience in key industries.
