Sierra Leone’s Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, has emphasized the importance of technology in transforming healthcare delivery across the country following a high-level meeting with China’s Ambassador to Sierra Leone, H.E. Zhao Yong, at the Youyi Building in Freetown on Wednesday.
“We want to ensure that technology reaches the last mile and improves how patients are treated,” Dr. Demby stated.
The meeting centered on strengthening health cooperation between Sierra Leone and China, with both sides agreeing to expand digital health services, extend mobile clinic outreach to underserved communities, and improve healthcare standards at the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital in Jui.
Dr. Demby noted that the partnership is expected to bridge gaps in healthcare access, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas. He explained that mobile clinics provide a practical solution for delivering medical screening, treatment, and health education in communities where permanent healthcare facilities remain limited.
Ambassador Zhao Yong reaffirmed China’s continued commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s healthcare system, highlighting the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital in Jui as a strong symbol of bilateral cooperation. Since its establishment, the hospital has served as both a referral and training center, and both parties agreed to further strengthen its capacity and improve the quality of patient care.
Discussions also focused on integrating digital technologies into patient management and health information systems. Officials said enhancing digital infrastructure would contribute to faster diagnoses, improved medical record-keeping, and more efficient use of healthcare resources.
The latest engagement builds on years of cooperation between Sierra Leone and China in the areas of health, infrastructure, and education. According to the Ministry of Health, the renewed focus on digital healthcare solutions and mobile outreach aligns with the government’s broader agenda to strengthen primary healthcare services and reduce preventable deaths nationwide.
The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to translating agreements into action, stressing that improvements in healthcare must deliver visible results at the community level.
