In a significant development for the country’s trade landscape, President Julius Maada Bio met with Coke Hamilton, the Executive Director of the International Trade Centre (ITC) in effort to enhance Sierra Leone’s trade capacities and foster economic growth.

The meeting which was held at State House on Thursday 23rd January 2025, marked the official opening of the ITC’s country office in Sierra Leone, a move that underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing international trade relations.

President Bio emphasised the importance of collaboration with the ITC, stating that the partnership aims to promote engagement in key trade sectors.

He added that the establishment of the country office is expected to create avenues for improved trade facilitation, which will ultimately benefit the nation’s economy.

President Bio mentioned that the International Trade Centre serves as a joint agency of the World Trade Organisation and the United Nations, plays a crucial role in supporting developing countries in their efforts to engage in international trade. “By opening an office in Sierra Leone, the ITC aims to provide tailored support to enhance the country’s trade capacities and foster economic development,” he said.

The timing of this partnership is particularly noteworthy as Sierra Leone seeks to diversify its economy and strengthen its position in the global market. The collaboration is expected to focus on optimising outcomes in various trade sectors, including agriculture and manufacturing, which are vital for the nation’s economic growth.
