In commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026, observed globally on May 28 each year, Premier Academy FC has partnered with Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL) Southern Region to raise awareness about menstrual health and provide support to vulnerable girls and women in Bo Municipality.

The initiative, led by WIMSAL Southern Region with the support of Premier Academy FC, sought to address menstrual hygiene challenges affecting girls and women, particularly those in underserved communities. This year’s observance focused on promoting dignity, confidence, and access to proper menstrual care while challenging the stigma often associated with menstruation.

As part of the outreach activities, members of WIMSAL Southern Region, accompanied by representatives of Premier Academy FC, visited the Paul School for Blind Pupils at Every Nation Academy and engaged with vulnerable persons, including beggars within Bo Municipality. During the visit, beneficiaries received essential items such as sanitary pads, laundry soap, bath soap, and other hygiene materials.

The outreach programme also emphasized menstrual hygiene education, encouraging girls and women to embrace self-confidence and self-worth rather than feeling ashamed or marginalized because of menstruation. Participants were educated on proper menstrual hygiene management practices and encouraged to overcome barriers often caused by limited access to sanitary products and information.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Premier Academy FC, Osman Kamara, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting girls and women across society.

According to Kamara, menstrual hygiene is not merely a health issue but also a matter of dignity and human rights. He noted that many girls continue to face challenges due to inadequate access to sanitary products and limited awareness of menstrual health issues.

“We are proud to partner with WIMSAL Southern Region in commemorating World Menstrual Hygiene Day. Every girl and woman deserves dignity, support, and access to proper menstrual care. Through this initiative, we want young girls to understand that menstruation should never limit their dreams, ambitions, or confidence,” he stated.

Kamara further encouraged young girls to believe in themselves and embrace confidence, dignity, and determination as they pursue their goals despite societal challenges.

Representatives of WIMSAL Southern Region emphasized that the annual observance serves as a reminder that menstruation is a natural biological process that should not hinder girls’ education, self-confidence, or participation in society. They called on institutions, development partners, stakeholders, and individuals to continue supporting efforts aimed at addressing menstrual poverty and empowering women and girls.

World Menstrual Hygiene Day is celebrated globally to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene, advocate for improved access to menstrual products and services, and promote a society in which every girl and woman can manage menstruation safely, confidently, and with dignity.
