From five beds to now 20 beds, healthcare delivery in Goderich has received a major boost following the commissioning of the upgraded Goderich Community Hospital by the Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, on Monday, 14th September 2026.
The expansion forms part of the Government of Sierra Leone’s ongoing efforts to improve access to safe, responsive and quality healthcare services, particularly in rapidly growing communities across the country.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Dr. Demby said the upgraded facility marks a new chapter for residents of Goderich, particularly women and children who previously faced limited capacity at the health centre.
He said the facility now has increased bed capacity, including improved maternity services, a dedicated Under-5 unit, a modern laboratory, solar power, clean water and high-speed internet connectivity for health workers.
Dr. Demby noted that the transformation was not simply about upgrading a building, but about providing safer births, faster medical care and reducing the need for residents to travel long distances in search of essential healthcare.
“No woman should give birth at home when a facility like this is right at your doorstep,” he stated.
The Minister called on residents of Goderich to make full use of the facility, protect it and support efforts to ensure that mothers and children receive the quality care they deserve.
The upgraded health centre is particularly significant for Goderich, a rapidly growing and cosmopolitan community where population growth and urban expansion continue to place pressure on public services.
The increased bed capacity is expected to improve access to healthcare for residents while reducing pressure on other health facilities and the need for patients to travel farther for essential medical attention.
The facility’s maternal health services have also been strengthened, with additional delivery beds providing a more suitable environment for expectant mothers to receive professional care before, during and after childbirth.
A dedicated Under-5 unit has also been established to strengthen the facility’s capacity to respond to the healthcare needs of infants and young children.
The upgrade was undertaken through the Government of Sierra Leone, in partnership with the World Bank and the Ministry of Health.
The development forms part of the Government’s broader commitment to human capital development under President Julius Maada Bio’s Big Five Game Changers.
The transformation of the Goderich Community Hospital is expected to bring essential healthcare services closer to residents and contribute to improved maternal and child health outcomes in Goderich and surrounding communities.
