Brazil and Morocco have both booked their places in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after hard-fought and emotionally charged knockout victories in the Round of 32, continuing their strong runs in the tournament.
Brazil secured their qualification after a tense 2–1 victory over Japan, a match that tested the five-time champions despite their superior quality on paper. Japan struck first through Kaishu Sano, punishing a defensive lapse in the first half. However, Brazil responded after the break when Casemiro levelled the score with a powerful header following sustained pressure. The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time when Gabriel Martinelli came off the bench to score the winning goal, sending Brazil into the next round and preserving their status as one of the tournament favourites.
Morocco also advanced in dramatic fashion after eliminating the Netherlands in a penalty shootout following a 1–1 draw after extra time. The Dutch took the lead through Cody Gakpo, but Morocco fought back late in the game when Issa Diop headed home a crucial equalizer in stoppage time to force extra time. With neither side able to break the deadlock, the match went to penalties, where Morocco held their nerve to win 3–2 in the shootout. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou once again proved decisive, making a key save that helped secure qualification for the Atlas Lions.
The results underline the growing competitiveness of the tournament, with Brazil relying on late resilience to survive a major scare, while Morocco continue to build on their reputation as one of the most dangerous knockout-stage teams, combining discipline, structure, and mental strength.
Both nations now move into the Round of 16, where they will look to continue their pursuit of World Cup glory in what is shaping up to be a highly unpredictable knockout phase.
