President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, paid a courtesy visit to President Dr. Julius Maada Bio at State House ahead of the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit, which is being hosted by Sierra Leone in Lungi.

President Bio announced the meeting in a public statement, noting that their discussions focused on key issues relating to the summit, which is bringing together Heads of State and Government from across the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The President expressed optimism that the summit would produce productive deliberations as regional leaders meet to address pressing issues affecting West Africa, including regional integration, peace and security, economic cooperation, and democratic governance.

The ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit provides member states with an opportunity to review the implementation of community programmes, assess progress on regional integration, and take strategic decisions on matters of common interest, including trade, infrastructure development, free movement of people, and regional stability.

By hosting the summit, Sierra Leone has become the centre of regional diplomacy this week, welcoming leaders and senior officials from across the 15-member ECOWAS bloc to deliberate on policies aimed at strengthening cooperation and accelerating development across West Africa.

President Bio, who currently serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, has consistently emphasized the importance of collective action, regional solidarity, and stronger partnerships in addressing the shared political, security, and economic challenges facing the sub-region.

Dr. Touray’s visit to State House formed part of high-level preparatory engagements between the ECOWAS Commission and the Government of Sierra Leone to ensure the successful organization and coordination of the summit’s formal proceedings in Lungi.

The summit is expected to conclude with a communiqué outlining decisions and commitments aimed at deepening regional integration, strengthening democratic governance, promoting economic growth, and enhancing peace and security across the ECOWAS community.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is a regional organization comprising 15 member states, established to promote economic integration, political cooperation, peace, and sustainable development across West Africa.

Headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria, the ECOWAS Commission serves as the executive arm of the organization, while the Authority of Heads of State and Government remain its highest decision-making body.
