In a significant development for education in Sierra Leone, the government has partnered with ELCOME to enhance internet connectivity across the nation’s universities.

This initiative, led by the Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation and the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, aims to provide reliable internet access to students and faculty, marking a transformative step in the country’s educational landscape.

As part of the implementation phase, Fourah Bay College has become the first institution to go live with Starlink services. Starting today, students can enjoy complimentary promotional internet access until March 31, 2025.

This initiative addresses the pressing need for reliable internet in academic settings and seeks to bridge the digital divide that has long hindered educational advancement in the region.

The partnership underscores the government’s commitment to improving digital infrastructure, which is a critical component of modern education.

The deployment of Starlink aims to provide high-speed internet, which is essential for research, online learning, and accessing educational resources. By facilitating better connectivity, the government hopes to enhance the overall learning experience for students and foster a more innovative and competitive academic environment.

“Today marks a new chapter for educational institutions in Sierra Leone,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Communication. “This initiative will empower students with the tools necessary to succeed in a digitally-driven world.”

As the program expands, plans are underway to extend Starlink services to all public and private universities across the country, ensuring that students nationwide can benefit from improved internet access.

This partnership is a crucial step toward equipping future generations with the skills and resources needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
