Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged Sichuan University to leverage its interdisciplinary strengths and play a pioneering role in serving China’s national development strategies.
Xi made the call in a reply letter to teachers and students of the university as he congratulated the institution on its 130th anniversary.
Xi, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, congratulated the university’s faculty, students and alumni on the milestone.
He noted that serving the country with dedication, taking root in western China and fostering talent through education are among Sichuan University’s longstanding traditions.
Xi encouraged the university to carry forward its legacy, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration across the humanities, sciences, engineering and medicine, and contribute to China’s efforts to become a leading country in education, science and technology, and talent development.
Sichuan University traces its history to the Sichuan Chinese and Western School, which was founded in 1896 and was the earliest institution of higher learning in southwest China.
