Three-time champions and defending league titleholders Mogbwemo Queens maintained their perfect start to the 2026/27 league campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Patricia Umu FC in their first home match of the season at Bo Coronation Field.
After a goalless first half, in-form forward Fatmata Turay broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, calmly converting a penalty to secure all three points for the defending champions.
The goal was Turay’s first of the ongoing league season, adding to the two assists she recorded in Mogbwemo Queens’ previous two matches. Her impressive performance earned her the Woman of the Match award for the second time this season.
Sunday’s victory extended Mogbwemo Queens’ winning run to three matches, making them the only team in the league to have won all their games so far. They also boast the league’s strongest defensive record, having yet to concede a goal.
However, their unbeaten defensive record will face a stern test this weekend when they take on second-placed Ram Kamara FC in the highly anticipated Southern Derby. Ram Kamara have scored 11 goals in their last three matches, making them a formidable challenge for the defending champions.
Mogbwemo Queens have enjoyed the upper hand in their previous league meetings with their southern rivals, recording five wins, two defeats and one draw in eight encounters. Their record includes a victory awarded to them in the second leg of the 2025/26 campaign.
The two sides have also contested the inaugural Women’s Unity Cup, which Mogbwemo Queens won. However, Ram Kamara denied the champions the opportunity to retain the trophy three weeks ago at the Southern Arena, securing a 2-1 victory in a match that saw Mogbwemo Queens play with ten players for more than 50 minutes following Jeanette D. Sagna’s dismissal in the 41st minute.
With only two points separating the two southern sides in the league standings, Saturday’s encounter promises to be a thrilling contest with significant implications for the title race.
The Southern Derby is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, at Bo Coronation Field, where Mogbwemo Queens will aim to preserve their perfect record while Ram Kamara FC seek to close the gap at the top.
