The Sierra Leone Institution of Geoscientists (SLIG) has urged the public to remain calm following reports of light earth tremors in parts of Freetown on October 13, 2026, calling for scientific investigation to establish the cause of the reported shaking.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the Institution said a magnitude 6.9 earthquake along the Central Mid-Atlantic Ridge, reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) at approximately 12:23 UTC on October 13, coincided with the time residents in central Freetown, including at Youyi Building, reported feeling tremors.
However, SLIG stressed that the coincidence in timing does not establish a direct causal link between the offshore earthquake and the reported shaking in Freetown.
The Institution said the reports could indicate a distant seismic source but emphasized that the cause, geographical extent and potential effects of the shaking require further verification through scientific evidence and appropriate seismic monitoring.
SLIG cautioned the public against panicking or circulating unverified claims that another major earthquake is imminent. It noted that earthquakes cannot currently be predicted with precision in terms of their exact time, location and magnitude.
“Nevertheless, the history of seismic activity in West Africa demonstrates the importance of preparedness, public awareness, and resilient infrastructure,” the Institution stated.
The geoscientists called on the Government, relevant technical agencies, emergency services and research institutions to collaborate in verifying the reported tremors using recognized international seismic records, available monitoring instruments and systematically collected eyewitness accounts.
SLIG also advocated for stronger earthquake monitoring systems, geological hazard assessments, public education and the integration of seismic risks into infrastructure planning and development.
As a precaution, the Institution advised members of the public to follow basic earthquake safety measures if shaking occurs.
People are advised to drop to their hands and knees, take cover under sturdy furniture where available, protect their heads and necks, and hold on until the shaking stops. They should also keep away from windows and objects that could fall.
The Sierra Leone Institution of Geoscientists is a professional body committed to advancing geoscientific knowledge and its application to national development.
