A reception held at the new Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Sierra Leone office in Freetown on Thursday, 21 May 2026, brought together government officials, diplomats, and energy-sector stakeholders to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States and highlight major upcoming energy reforms in Sierra Leone.
The event, hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Sierra Leone in partnership with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), was organized ahead of the implementation of the $480 million MCC Compact project. The initiative is intended to modernize and expand Sierra Leone’s national power grid, with the aim of delivering more affordable and reliable electricity across the country.
Organizers described the project as a transformative moment for Sierra Leone’s energy sector. “Power means progress,” the Embassy stated, emphasizing that the compact is designed to address long-standing energy constraints that have hindered economic growth and public service delivery.
Speaking during the reception, Chargé d’Affaires Yancey said the partnership demonstrates a shared commitment to overcoming Sierra Leone’s energy challenges.
“Together, we are tackling the energy constraints that hold back economic growth, paving the way for a more prosperous Sierra Leone,” Yancey said.
The gathering attracted senior government officials, diplomats, and representatives from the energy sector, reflecting broad national and international support for the programme.
Officials noted that the compact will prioritize strengthening transmission and distribution infrastructure, improving governance within the electricity sector, and creating a more enabling environment for private-sector investment.
The $480 million MCC Compact is regarded as one of the most significant energy investments in Sierra Leone in recent years. Implementation is expected to begin in the coming months, with phased rollouts planned across key parts of the national grid.
The reception also served as the Embassy’s official commemoration of the U.S. semiquincentennial celebration, linking the historic milestone to ongoing bilateral cooperation on development priorities in Sierra Leone.
In addition, both sides described the event as an important step toward deeper collaboration in infrastructure development and economic growth, with energy identified as a key driver of national progress.
