At the recent International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Governing Council in Rome, Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio highlighted the significant advancements achieved under the country’s flagship initiative, the “Feed Salone” program on Wednesday 12th February, 2025.

This initiative is designed to transform food systems by prioritising rural development, crucial for enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth, who are vital to the nation’s economy.

During his address, President Bio emphasised that the program aims to empower local communities, stating, “In Sierra Leone, our smallholder farmers, especially women and youth, are the backbone of our economy.” His remarks underscored the critical role that rural development plays in achieving food security and fostering economic growth.

The collaboration with IFAD has been instrumental in driving Sierra Leone’s agricultural transformation. The president noted that with IFAD’s unwavering support, the nation has made notable strides in improving rural livelihoods through innovative programs that cater to the needs of local farmers. “Together, we are rolling out new transformative programs,” Bio added, illustrating the partnership’s commitment to sustainable development.

President Bio also called on global partners to enhance investments in rural areas, urging them to unlock innovative financing mechanisms that prioritize rural communities. “The first mile is where food security is won or lost,” he declared, highlighting the necessity of focusing resources on grassroots initiatives that directly impact food production and security.

The “Feed Salone”  initiative not only addresses food security but also seeks to uplift the socio-economic status of rural populations. By fostering an environment where smallholder farmers can thrive, Sierra Leone aims to set a precedent for agricultural resilience in the face of global challenges.

The discussions at the IFAD Governing Council reflect a growing recognition of the importance of rural development in achieving broader economic goals.

As nations grapple with food security issues exacerbated by climate change and economic instability, Sierra Leone’s example serves as a beacon of hope, showcasing how targeted efforts can yield transformative results for communities.

Conclusively, with President Bio’s commitment to driving change and the support of international partners, Sierra Leone is poised to continue its journey toward a more sustainable and secure food future.
