Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes played through a cracked rib during the final stages of the 2026 World Cup, including the final against Spain, a report has revealed.
According to ESPN journalist Martin Arevalo, the 32-year-old anchored Argentina’s midfield in their last three knockout matches despite the injury. The team reportedly kept the information hidden to prevent opponents from targeting him.
Paredes featured prominently as Lionel Messi’s side reached the July 19 final in New Jersey, which ended in a 1-0 defeat to Spain. The midfielder was also involved in a post-match brawl that saw him receive a red card.
The revelation was first reported by Arevalo and later highlighted by football outlet EuroFoot on X.
“Leandro Paredes (32) played three matches for Argentina with a crack in his rib. He struggled to breathe on some days,” EuroFoot posted. “The injury was not released to the public due to the fear that opponents would target him.”
The news has split opinion among fans. Argentina supporters praised Paredes for his “warrior spirit” and commitment to the national team, while critics pointed to his on-field clashes with Spain’s Eric Garcia and Gavi during the tournament.
