The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Segepoh Solomon Solomon Thomas, on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, expressed appreciation for the return of Opposition Members of Parliament to their legislative duties.

The Speaker stated that he felt proud of the Opposition MPs for resuming their seats, noting that they were elected by their constituents and therefore have a national duty to serve. He emphasized that nothing should prevent them from representing the interests of their people. He further encouraged them to actively use the Well of Parliament to address the concerns of their constituents, stating: “Please use the Well of Parliament as an open space to advocate for your people.”

In response, the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, commended the Speaker for his role in facilitating their return to Parliament. He recalled that the Speaker held several meetings with Opposition MPs in his office, appealing for their return to legislative duties. He also noted that the Speaker facilitated a meeting with the President, aimed at resolving the political impasse.

Hon. Kargbo stated: “As the Opposition, we want to express our thanks and appreciation for the role you played, Mr. Speaker. We also thank you for serving as the conduit that enabled us to meet with the President. You facilitated a very productive meeting. You have demonstrated exemplary leadership, for which we remain grateful.”

The Opposition Leader further urged that the Communiqué signed to pave the way for their return to Parliament be fully implemented. He specifically highlighted the need for the Agreement for National Unity to be laid in Parliament, as well as the establishment of a committee to provide oversight of the Elections Management Body.

In his response, Speaker Thomas acknowledged the concerns raised by the Opposition Leader regarding the implementation of the Communiqué. He noted that the Leaders of Government Business are currently engaged in official duties at various international parliamentary engagements.

The Speaker assured the House that the necessary actions would be taken once the leadership of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) returns to Parliament from their official assignments.
