The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, on Thursday commemorated the International Day of Families with a Family Health Walk in Freetown aimed at promoting child protection, family unity, and social inclusion.

Held under the theme, “Families, Inequalities and Child Well-being,” the event attracted government officials, development partners, civil society organizations, parents, teachers, youth groups, and children. Participants marched through major streets in the capital carrying placards with messages advocating for child welfare, gender equality, quality education, and stronger family values.

Organizers said the walk was intended to raise awareness about the importance of strengthening family systems and addressing inequalities affecting vulnerable children and families across Sierra Leone.

Speaking during the event, the Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting children and strengthening family structures through laws and policies designed to safeguard the rights of women and children.

She stated that the New Child Rights Act of 2025 provides stronger protection against child abuse, exploitation, neglect, child labor, and child marriage. She also described the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act of 2022 as a landmark step toward advancing women’s participation and equality in Sierra Leone.

The Minister emphasized that addressing inequalities within families and communities remains essential to improving child well-being and achieving sustainable national development.

She further called on parents, caregivers, schools, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to work together in creating safe and supportive environments where children can develop academically, socially, and emotionally.

Representatives from the participating ministries also highlighted the need to improve access to education, healthcare, psychosocial support, and social protection services for vulnerable children and families.

They called for sustained public awareness campaigns and stronger community engagement to address social challenges affecting family stability and child development.

The event concluded with participants renewing calls for collective responsibility in promoting family cohesion, protecting children’s rights, and building a more inclusive society for future generations.
