The Kono Rehabilitation Centre in Simbakoro, Gbense Chiefdom, Kono District, has successfully reintegrated its first batch of recovered drug victims following the completion of a 50-day rehabilitation and recovery programme aimed at restoring their lives and facilitating their successful return to society.

A total of 48 out of the 50 individuals admitted to the centre successfully completed the programme and were officially reintegrated into their communities as ambassadors for recovery and positive social change. The remaining two participants voluntarily left the facility before completing the rehabilitation process.

The reintegration ceremony was marked by scenes of joy, hope, and optimism as family members, community leaders, government officials, and other stakeholders gathered to celebrate the achievements of the newly graduated ambassadors. Many described the event as a beacon of hope for families affected by substance abuse and a significant milestone in the fight against drug addiction in Sierra Leone.

As part of efforts to support the ambassadors in rebuilding their lives, Lek You Culture Organization provided each beneficiary with a token of support to help them establish productive livelihoods and successfully transition back into society.

Stakeholders attending the ceremony called on development partners, community leaders, and residents to embrace and support the former drug users rather than continually reminding them of their past mistakes. They emphasized that persistent stigmatization and negative references to their previous lifestyles could have serious psychological consequences and potentially undermine their recovery journey.

The stakeholders further urged communities to create an enabling environment that promotes rehabilitation, acceptance, and personal growth for individuals recovering from substance abuse.

Speaking during the ceremony, several of the recovered individuals expressed profound gratitude to the rehabilitation centre, their families, and supporting organizations for helping them overcome addiction and regain control of their lives.

They pledged not to return to their former lifestyles and vowed to serve as role models and advocates for positive change within their communities.

“We have chosen life over addiction,” some of the ambassadors declared, promising to use their experiences to discourage others from engaging in drug abuse and to promote healthy, productive, and responsible living.

The successful reintegration of the first batch of recovered drug victims is being hailed as a major milestone in Kono District’s efforts to combat substance abuse and strengthen community-based recovery initiatives.

Stakeholders expressed hope that the programme will continue to expand, providing more individuals struggling with addiction with the opportunity to recover, rebuild their lives, and make meaningful contributions to society.
