Justice Sahr Kekura: From Magistrate to the High Court Bench

Magistrate Sahr Elogima Kekura, a seasoned and respected judicial officer, has been appointed as a High Court Judge in Sierra Leone marking a major milestone in a legal career defined by integrity, professionalism, and public service.

Justice Kekura’s elevation is the culmination of over a decade of experience presiding over cases in judicial districts across the country, earning him a reputation for diligence, fairness, and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law.

Born on May 30, 1976, in Kono District, Justice Kekura is a devout Christian and fluent in English, Krio, and Mende, which has enabled him to engage effectively with diverse communities. He is married and enjoys reading, music, games, and sports.

His academic journey began at Holy Trinity Secondary School in Kenema and continued at Government Secondary School in Bo. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fourah Bay College (2000–2003) and went on to pursue an LL.B (Hons) from the same institution (2004–2008). He completed his legal training at the Sierra Leone Law School, obtaining his Barrister-at-Law qualification in 2010.

Justice Kekura has also undertaken specialized training, earning a certificate in Maritime Security from the Interregional Institute of Maritime Security in Abidjan. In 2021, he completed professional courses on case management, disrupting illegal wildlife trade in West Africa, and environmental law.

His legal career began as a Pupil Barrister at Brewah & Co (2010–2011), and he signed the permanent register of legal practitioners in 2012. However, his calling to the bench defined his legacy.

Between 2012 and 2016, he served as a Magistrate in the Moyamba and Bonthe Judicial Districts. He was later transferred to Port Loko District, covering Lungi and Mile Siaka (2016–2017), and to Tonkolili District (2017–2018), where he presided over cases in Mile 91 and Bumbuna. He also served in Karene District from August 2021 to November 2022, before being assigned to the Ross Road Court in Freetown from 2022 to 2023.

His judicial acumen earned him further recognition, and in 2020, he was promoted to Principal Magistrate and assigned to Court No. 1 on Pademba Road in Freetown, after earlier service at Court No. 3.

Throughout his judicial journey, Justice Kekura has been lauded for his impartiality, legal knowledge, and commitment to delivering justice without fear or favor. His deep experience in the lower courts has given him keen insight into the legal issues affecting everyday Sierra Leoneans.

Now stepping into his new role at the High Court, Justice Sahr Elogima Kekura brings with him a profound understanding of the law, a passion for justice, and a proven track record of service to Sierra Leone’s judiciary.

His appointment is widely viewed as a welcome advancement for the country’s legal system and a reinforcement of public confidence in the courts.
