From humble beginnings in Moyamba District to the global academic stage, the story of Christiana Lansana is one of resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to education.
Born into modest circumstances, Christiana spent her early years in the province living with her father under challenging conditions. Her life took a decisive turn when her mother brought her to Freetown in search of better opportunities. Despite facing her own struggles, her mother prioritized education—an act that would shape Christiana’s future.
She began her formal education at National Pentecostal Primary School, where she initially faced adjustment challenges. Through determination and guidance from her teachers, she quickly distinguished herself as one of the school’s top students. She excelled academically, actively participated in debates and quiz competitions, and rose to the position of Deputy Head Girl.
Her strong performance in the National Primary School Examination (NPSE) earned her admission to St. Joseph Secondary School. There, she continued to shine as a consistent top performer. She served as Class Prefect and later School Prefect, while also gaining recognition as one of the school’s best female runners.
However, her journey was marked by profound personal loss. During her junior secondary years, Christiana lost her mother—a devastating setback that brought both emotional and financial challenges. With the support of mentors, institutions, and well-wishers, she remained focused on her education.
She went on to excel in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, securing admission to Fourah Bay College.
At Fourah Bay College, Christiana pursued Gender and Development Studies and quickly rose to the top of her class, earning multiple academic awards. Her leadership abilities flourished within the Sierra Leone Debating Council, where she made history as the first female President in over a decade, breaking a long-standing trend of male leadership.
After graduating as one of the best students in her department, she pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree at the same institution. Her leadership journey continued as she was appointed Minister of Education in the Students’ Union Government. She also contested for the position of Student Union President, reflecting her strong commitment to advocacy and service.
Her academic excellence soon opened international opportunities. Christiana gained admission to Ohio University, where she pursued a Master’s degree in Communication and Development Studies.
In the United States, she continued to excel academically. She received multiple honors, including recognition from the Scripps College of Communication, and presented her research at academic conferences. As a Teaching Assistant and later Instructor of Record for COMS 1030: Fundamentals of Public Speaking, she independently managed undergraduate classes designing course materials, delivering lectures, and mentoring students.
Beyond academics, she served as Vice President of the Africa Student Union, promoting community and cultural engagement among African graduate students.
At the core of her work is a deep commitment to gender equity and women’s leadership. Her research explores how women navigate leadership spaces, particularly in environments where they remain underrepresented, contributing to broader discussions on inclusion and social change.
In a defining milestone, Christiana graduated with her Master’s degree from Ohio University an achievement that reflects years of perseverance and purpose. She has now secured admission into a PhD program in Communication Studies at the same institution, where she will further her research on gender, leadership, and policy.
From a young girl facing uncertainty in Moyamba to a scholar, educator, and emerging global leader, Christiana Lansana’s journey is a powerful testament to the transformative power of education and opportunity.
Her latest achievement is not the end, but the continuation of a purpose-driven path. As she begins her doctoral studies, one thing is clear: Christiana Lansana is only just getting started.
