More than 150 yoga enthusiasts gathered in Freetown on Saturday to commemorate the 12th International Day of Yoga, with this year’s global theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” taking centre stage. The strong turnout reflected the growing popularity of yoga in Sierra Leone and its emphasis on health, harmony, and overall well-being.
The celebration brought together members of the diplomatic community, government representatives, and wellness advocates for a day of guided sessions, stretching exercises, breathing techniques, and meditation. The event was graced by the Ambassador of France, the Head of UNICEF in Sierra Leone, and the Honorary Consuls of Sweden, Norway, and Côte d’Ivoire. Members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, friends of India, and local wellness enthusiasts also participated.
The International Day of Yoga is observed annually on 21 June, following a United Nations resolution adopted in 2014. The day promotes yoga as a holistic practice that supports physical, mental, and social well-being. This year’s theme, “Healthy Ageing,” highlighted yoga’s role in improving flexibility, balance, cardiovascular health, and stress management across all age groups.
Organizers noted that the large turnout demonstrated increasing public interest in wellness and preventive healthcare practices in Sierra Leone. Participants included both beginners and experienced practitioners, with instructors leading sessions tailored to different fitness levels and age groups. The programme emphasized simple postures, breathing techniques, and meditation practices that can be easily incorporated into daily routines to support healthy ageing.
Speakers at the event emphasized that yoga’s universal appeal lies in its accessibility and non-competitive nature. They stressed that regular practice can help reduce lifestyle-related health risks while promoting mindfulness and a sense of community.
The celebration was made possible through the efforts of yoga instructors, partners, and supporters who coordinated logistics, training, and outreach activities. Organizers expressed appreciation to all participants for contributing to what they described as a successful and inclusive event.
The event adds to a growing calendar of wellness and health-promotion activities in Freetown, as interest in fitness, mental health, and community-based exercise continues to rise. With yoga classes now offered at several studios and community centres in the capital, practitioners say the International Day of Yoga provides an annual platform to introduce new people to the practice and reinforce its long-term health benefits.
The 12th edition concluded with a group meditation session and a message of unity, reflecting the global call for harmony through health and well-being.
