On January 20, 2025, Donald J. Trump was inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States, marking his return to the White House after a four-year hiatus. The ceremony, originally planned for the Capitol’s West Front, was relocated indoors to the Capitol Rotunda due to dangerously cold temperatures, reminiscent of Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration in 1985.

Chief Justice John Roberts administered the presidential oath of office to Trump, who placed his hand on two Bibles: one gifted by his mother and the historic Lincoln Bible.  The oath, as prescribed by the U.S. Constitution, was recited by Trump:

“I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

In his inaugural address, President Trump emphasised a theme of “American Renewal,” focusing on restoring the nation’s economy, strengthening borders, and reasserting the United States’ position on the global stage. He declared, “Today, we begin a new chapter in American greatness. Together, we will restore our nation’s pride and prosperity.” He also pledged to “bring jobs back to our shores” and “ensure that our borders are secure.”

The inauguration was attended by a host of prominent political figures and influential individuals. Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton were present, accompanied by their respective spouses. Notably, former First Lady Michelle Obama and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi were absent from the event.  Tech industry leaders, including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg, were also in attendance, highlighting the intersection of technology and governance in the current era.

In a display of bipartisan unity and the peaceful transfer of power, outgoing President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden welcomed President-elect Trump and his wife Melania to the White House for tea before proceeding together to the Capitol for the ceremony. This tradition underscores the resilience of American democracy.

Following the swearing-in, President Trump signed several executive orders in the President’s Room at the Capitol, signalling the immediate commencement of his administration’s agenda. The day’s events concluded with the presidential parade, which, due to the inclement weather, was viewed by attendees at the Capital One Arena. The evening featured three inaugural balls, celebrating the beginning of the new administration.

The day began with a honoured prayer service at St. John’s Episcopal Church, where President-elect Trump and First Lady Melania Trump prayed for wisdom and strength for the years ahead. This was followed by a traditional tea meeting at the White House, hosted by outgoing President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, symbolising a peaceful transition of power despite recent political tensions.

In his inaugural address, President Trump surprised many with a call for bipartisan cooperation, stating, “To every citizen, regardless of party or background, I extend my hand. Together, we can achieve greatness beyond imagination.” He promised immediate action on economic revival, border security, and international diplomacy.

The inauguration of President Trump marks a significant moment in American history, as he embarks on his second term with a vision aimed at revitalising the nation’s core values and addressing the challenges ahead.
