The Countdown Community Health and Well-being Network has launched a campaign to raise awareness about prostate cancer, led by Ishmail Sankoh (DJ Ish), Abdul Seisay (DJ Little), Dr. Achmed Kamara, and Haja Sesay.
The initiative was prompted by recent findings indicating a rising concern over prostate cancer cases, with reports suggesting it has become one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the United Kingdom.
The campaign, which focuses on saving lives and changing perceptions through Social and Behavioural Change Communication (SBCC), took place on Saturday, 13 June 2026, at Burgess Park in the United Kingdom.
“Health is wealth,” said Ishmail Sankoh, referencing data showing that approximately one in eight men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, with an estimated 12,200 deaths recorded annually, according to a leading health charity cited by The Guardian.
Sankoh further highlighted that the situation is particularly concerning for Black men, among whom one in four is expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. He also noted that Black men are more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage compared to their White counterparts, increasing the risk of severe outcomes.
He emphasized that early detection, regular screening, and public education are essential in reducing preventable deaths and improving survival rates.
Organizers of the campaign said the initiative has received widespread commendation, as more than 12,000 men continue to die from prostate cancer each year in the UK. They stressed that increased awareness and community engagement remain critical in addressing the growing public health concern.
The Countdown Community Health and Well-being Network stated that it remains committed to promoting health education, encouraging early screening, and supporting behavioural change initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes within vulnerable communities.
