As a first step towards revitalizing the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL), Ishmail Saidu Kanu has unveiled a comprehensive manifesto titled “Let’s Reclaim SWASAL Together”. The manifesto outlines an ambitious roadmap to transform the association into a more professional, inclusive, and impactful organization that drives the growth of sports journalism and sports development in Sierra Leone.
Speaking to members of SWASAL, Kanu emphasized his commitment to decentralization, resource mobilization, and fostering stronger partnerships within the sports ecosystem. He highlighted key areas including decentralization and inclusivity, financial sustainability, constitutional modernization, reviving the SWASAL Annual Awards Gala, and introducing radio SWASAL.
Kanu’s manifesto underscores the importance of extending SWASAL’s operations beyond its Freetown headquarters to regional hubs such as Makeni, Port Loko, Bo, and Kenema. He pledged to organize frequent regional and general meetings, empower regional executives, and ensure equitable representation of members nationwide.
To secure SWASAL’s future, Kanu proposes innovative resource mobilization strategies, including partnerships with government, businesses, and international organizations. He plans to establish sustainable funds for training programs, scholarships, and sports development projects, alongside strengthening SWASAL’s subscription system.
Acknowledging the need for a robust governance framework, Kanu promised to spearhead a constitutional review to align SWASAL with global best practices. The review will address gaps in leadership processes, membership regulations, and dispute resolution.
Kanu aims to restore the prestige of the SWASAL Annual Awards Gala, which celebrates excellence in sports journalism and achievements in Sierra Leone’s sports sector. He envisions the gala as a platform for recognizing emerging talent and fostering unity within the sporting community.
A standout proposal is the launch of Radio SWASAL, a dedicated platform for sports news, interviews, and analysis. Kanu highlighted this project as a means to enhance the visibility of SWASAL while creating employment opportunities for its members.
Other Key Proposals spoken about were professional development but not limited to regular training workshops, mentorship programs, and scholarships to equip members with modern skills.
Stronger Stakeholder Engagement: He said partnerships with national and international sports organizations to amplify SWASAL’s influence.
Modernizing Sports Commentaries: Upgrading broadcast technologies and providing advanced training for commentators.
Enhanced Visibility: Expanding SWASAL’s presence on social media platforms to reach wider audiences.
In his closing appeal, Kanu urged SWASAL members to support his candidacy, promising a future marked by growth, unity, and excellence. “Together, we can create an environment that fosters excellence and empowers us to reach new heights. Let’s reclaim SWASAL together the time is now!”
