Lissa Chesney, the British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, paid a historic visit to Kowa Chiefdom on May 15, 2024. This visit marked the first time a British High Commissioner has visited the chiefdom, a fact highlighted by the reception given by the local community.
Chesney was warmly welcomed with traditional dances and ceremonies, led by the newly elected Paramount Chief, Amy Tattor Kallon Tibbie. Chiefdom elders and key stakeholders were also present to greet her.
During a private meeting with Paramount Chief Tibbie, Chesney inquired about the challenges facing the chiefdom. Expressing her delight at meeting the young female leader, Chesney promised support in the agricultural and health sectors. She also addressed critical social issues, urging the community to combat sexual and gender-based violence and discourage early marriages. She emphasized the importance of education for girls, advocating for them to complete their schooling.
Paramount Chief Tibbie expressed her gratitude for the visit, reflecting the community’s appreciation and excitement. Chesney concluded her visit with a commitment to future engagements, including a forthcoming meeting in Freetown.
This visit signifies a strengthening of ties and cooperation between the British High Commission and the Kowa Chiefdom, with promises of support aimed at improving the lives of the chiefdom’s residents.
