In a historic electoral event held on February 14th, 2024, the people of Njama Kowa Chiefdom, formerly known as Njama Quee, in Moyamba district exercised their democratic rights to elect a paramount chief.
The polling took place at the chiefdom court barry amidst the presence of esteemed dignitaries including Southern Region Commissioner of ECSL, Edmond Alpha, Western Region Commissioner Umu Hawa Moseray, Provincial Secretary South Moses Gbetu, NACSA Commissioner Ernest Ndomahina, and several elected paramount chiefs.
Four candidates vied for the paramount chieftaincy: John Tibbie, Nat Tibbie, William Quee, and Amy Tattor Tibbie Kallon. The Provincial Secretary South, Moses Gbetu, inaugurated the voting process with an assurance of robust security measures. Notably, the Tribal Authorities (T.As), who hold voting rights, were reminded by Commissioner Edmond Alpha to present their local tax receipts, a prerequisite for voting.
After a serene and orderly voting session, the Provincial Secretary, Moses Gbetu, announced the results. William Quee secured no votes, John Tibbie received one vote, Nat Tibbie received none, and in a resounding victory, Amy Tattor Tibbie Kallon emerged as the clear winner with an overwhelming 132 votes, representing over 90% of the total valid votes cast.
Addressing the media, the newly elected Paramount Chief, Amy Tattor Tibbie Kallon, expressed her commitment to enhancing agriculture, the flagship program of the government, within the chiefdom. Despite facing adversity, including the burning of her family house and the shooting of her husband, Chief-elect Kallon remained undeterred, radiating optimism and determination.
She emphasized her contributions to the education sector, ensuring pupils from her chiefdom access public exams in neighboring jurisdictions. Furthermore, Chief-elect Kallon articulated her vision to elevate the chiefdom to a Class A standard.
Following the declaration of the winner, an atmosphere of joy and celebration enveloped the chiefdom, marking the dawn of a new era under the leadership of Paramount Chief-elect Amy Tattor Tibbie Kallon. Her victory represents a significant milestone in the democratic process of Njama Kowa Chiefdom, symbolizing hope and progress for its residents.
