The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has launched the country’s first-ever Women’s Football Strategy, setting out a four-year framework to promote the development of women’s football and expand opportunities for women and girls across the country.

The strategy was officially launched on October 28, 2026, by SLFA President Babadi Kamara at the Freetown City Council Hall, marking a significant step towards strengthening women’s participation and development in football.

The ceremony was attended by SLFA Second Vice President Prince Saquee; Executive Director of the National Sports Authority, Mohamed Alphaka Conteh Esq.; SLFA General Secretary Ing. Mohamed Benson Bawoh; and Women’s Football Manager Elizabeth Kailey. FIFA representatives Thubaelihie Bridgette Sibanda of Zimbabwe and Tsholofelo Candy Setlhoko of Botswana also attended the event.

The strategy provides a comprehensive framework for advancing women’s football over the next four years, covering grassroots participation, talent development, administration and progression to the international level. It is intended to strengthen existing football structures and create more opportunities for women and girls to participate in the game.

Speaking at the launch, SLFA President Babadi Kamara described the strategy as more than a milestone, saying it represents a commitment to the future of women’s football in Sierra Leone.

“The launch of our first-ever Women’s Football Strategy is more than a milestone; it is a commitment to the future of women’s football in Sierra Leone. We want every girl to have the opportunity to play, develop her talent, and aspire to the highest level of the game. Our responsibility now is to work with our partners and stakeholders to turn this strategy into tangible results,” Kamara said.

Following the launch, the SLFA, with support from FIFA, commenced a three-day capacity-building workshop for women’s football administrators, scheduled to run from October 28 to 30, 2026.

The workshop is designed to strengthen the knowledge and administrative skills of participants, enabling them to contribute effectively to the implementation of the strategy.

The initiative is expected to support the development of stronger administrative structures and promote a more inclusive and sustainable environment for women’s football in Sierra Leone.

The successful implementation of the strategy will depend on sustained collaboration among the SLFA, FIFA, football administrators and other stakeholders to translate its objectives into practical results for women and girls across the country.
