The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has announced a nationwide tribute to Lionel Messi, with football matches across Argentina set to pause in the 10th minute to honour the country’s iconic No. 10.
Under the announced arrangement, all men’s and women’s divisions, as well as futsal and beach football competitions, will observe a one-minute ovation during the 10th minute of play.
Stadiums equipped with video screens will also show a tribute video in honour of Messi before kick-off. The gesture was first introduced during the Copa Argentina match between Vélez Sarsfield and Boca Juniors.
Messi, 39, reportedly announced his retirement from international football following Argentina’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain.
He leaves international football as Argentina’s record appearance holder with 207 caps and all-time leading scorer with 125 goals. He also led the national team to World Cup glory in 2022 and Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024.
