Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 33, bringing an end to his Germany career after 86 appearances.
The centre-back announced his decision on Tuesday via social media, confirming that his final appearance for Germany came in their 2026 World Cup Round of 32 defeats to Paraguay.
Rüdiger made his Germany debut in 2014 and went on to represent the four-time world champions at three World Cups and two European Championships. He also played every minute of Germany’s Euro 2020 campaign.
In announcing his retirement, Rüdiger said he had spent time reflecting before deciding to end his international career and make way for the next generation.
He thanked his teammates, coaches and supporters, including former managers Joachim Löw, Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann. He also highlighted the unforgettable atmosphere created by German fans during Euro 2024.
Rüdiger will now shift his full attention to club football with Real Madrid, closing a decade-long international career that was marked by his physical style, leadership and versatility in defence.
The experienced defender leaves the national team having established himself as one of Germany’s key defenders of his generation.
