The District Medical Officer (DMO) of Kono District, Dr. Mohamed G. Sheku, raised concern over a significant increase in dog bite cases in the district.

He made the statement during a partners and District Health Management Team (DHMT) coordination meeting held at the Directorate of Primary Health Care, DHMT Office on Bona Street, Koidu City, on Wednesday, 17 June 2026.

Dr. Sheku reported that from January to May 2026, at least 263 cases of dog bites were officially recorded, treated, and documented in the district. Of these cases, 143 involved males and 120 involved females.

He explained that the rising number of dog bite incidents is largely linked to poor animal care practices and violations of animal welfare standards. According to him, many dogs are not properly cared for by their owners, resulting in a growing population of stray dogs across Koidu City.

“These stray dogs often roam the streets and sometimes attack people, particularly when they are hungry or agitated,” he noted.

Dr. Sheku further disclosed that although fatalities from dog bites have not been widespread, the district has recorded at least one death linked to a dog bite incident involving a stakeholder in Koidu City.

He warned that the situation is worsened by the unavailability of anti-rabies vaccines in the district, describing it as a serious public health concern that could lead to avoidable deaths if not urgently addressed.

“The issue of dog bites is very worrying, especially because anti-rabies vaccines are currently not available in the district. This creates a dangerous situation for victims and increases the risk of fatalities,” he said.

Dr. Sheku urged dog owners to take full responsibility for their animals and adhere to proper animal welfare practices to reduce the growing menace.

He also called on the public to be vigilant and avoid contact with stray dogs, stressing that many zoonotic diseases, including rabies, can be transmitted through animal bites if not properly treated.

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of responsible pet ownership and improved public health preparedness to prevent further incidents in the district.
