The Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECsalone), Edmund Alpha, met with Team Europe at the European Union Delegation to Sierra Leone in Freetown on 26 May 2026 to review ongoing cooperation on electoral processes.
Commissioner Saffa also joined the courtesy meeting. Discussions focused on the long-standing partnership between Sierra Leone and the European Union in supporting the country’s electoral cycle, including technical assistance, institutional capacity building, and knowledge exchange between election periods.
ECsalone is the independent institution mandated to organise and manage national elections in Sierra Leone. Team Europe, represented by the EU Delegation, coordinates European Union and member-state support for governance and democratic processes in the country.
European Union assistance to Sierra Leone’s electoral process has included support for voter registration systems, staff training for the commission, and the deployment of election observation missions. These initiatives are aimed at strengthening ECsalone’s operational capacity and promoting transparent and credible elections in line with national laws.
The engagement forms part of ongoing consultations between ECsalone and international partners ahead of upcoming electoral activities. The Commission’s responsibilities include voter registration, polling operations, results management, and civic education for presidential, parliamentary, and local council elections.
In a statement shared on ECsalone’s official platform, the Commission described the meeting as part of its continued engagement with international partners. The statement also used the hashtag #EUnaSalone, commonly associated with EU-funded programmes and cooperation initiatives in Sierra Leone.
The EU Delegation in Freetown implements Team Europe’s support through direct projects and coordination with EU member states. Electoral cooperation remains one component of a broader partnership portfolio that also includes governance, rule of law, and public administration support.
No further details regarding specific agenda items were released by either side. However, the meeting reflects ongoing diplomatic and technical engagement between ECsalone and its international partners ahead of the next phase of electoral preparations.
Edmund Alpha currently serves as Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of ECsalone, while Commissioner Saffa is a member of the Commission’s leadership body.
