Sierra Leone is marking World Creativity and Innovation Day with a renewed push to expand youth participation in the tourism and cultural sector. The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs has rolled out programs aimed at unlocking potential from the primary and secondary school levels.
The 2026 theme, Culture and Creativity, has shaped the Ministry’s strategy to build structured pathways that connect young people to livelihoods within the industry. Officials say this approach reflects a deliberate effort to introduce creativity and innovation early, helping students develop both skills and confidence while fostering a mindset geared toward sustaining and reimagining the sector.
“Every individual has a meaningful and productive role within the tourism and cultural industry, whether as a creator, entrepreneur, artisan, performer, storyteller, or custodian of our heritage,” the Ministry said in a statement marking the day. It added that the occasion provides an opportunity to recognize institutions and individuals who have created platforms where creativity can thrive.
The Ministry’s strategy focuses on making tourism a space for long-term participation rather than short-term engagement. By involving younger students, it aims to nurture innovation rooted in Sierra Leone’s diverse cultural heritage, which officials describe as the sector’s defining strength. This approach is intended to strengthen the industry while securing its future through a pipeline of skilled and motivated talent.
Authorities emphasized that meaningful inclusion goes beyond recognizing talent—it restores dignity, creates sustainable livelihoods, and contributes directly to national development. Tourism, they noted, depends on creativity that reflects the country’s unique traditions, arts, and storytelling, making cultural preservation and economic opportunity mutually reinforcing.
This year’s observance also highlights key partnerships supporting the Ministry’s work. Appreciation was extended to Sierra Leone Commercial Bank, National Revenue Authority, National Investment Board, Rokel Commercial Bank, and Inkee Media for their collaboration, alongside the country’s creative community for driving progress on the ground.
The broader goal is to build a sector that celebrates talent while generating tangible economic outcomes for communities. Officials say the focus on youth aligns with national efforts to diversify the economy and position culture and tourism as engines of growth and employment.
As programs expand across schools and communities, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to creating clear structures that enable young people to participate, innovate, and build sustainable careers within Sierra Leone’s cultural and tourism landscape.
