Efforts to strengthen health systems across West Africa have taken center stage in Freetown, where senior officials and policymakers convened for the 26th Annual Meeting of the West African Health Organization Financial Support Steering Committee.
Speaking at the opening session, Komba Momoh, Deputy Secretary at the Ministry of Planning, emphasized the urgent need for deeper regional cooperation to address persistent healthcare challenges. He delivered remarks on behalf of the Resident Representative, John Azuma, extending goodwill from the Government of Sierra Leone and welcoming delegates from across the sub-region.
The meeting, held under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has brought together 12 Steering Committee members, along with parliamentarians and diplomatic representatives, to review progress and refine strategies for managing financial support to member states.
Momoh noted that the gathering comes at a pivotal moment, as the committee—established in May 2024 continues to strengthen governance frameworks within the West African Health Organization. He stressed that beyond dialogue, the forum is designed to reinforce accountability, improve coordination, and ensure more efficient use of resources dedicated to health development.
Highlighting Sierra Leone’s experience, Momoh stated that WAHO-supported initiatives have already delivered tangible benefits, particularly in maternal and child health, disease surveillance, and workforce capacity building. He pointed to improved financial reporting systems and stronger collaboration among national stakeholders as key outcomes of the programme.
“These achievements demonstrate what is possible when countries work together under a shared vision,” he said, adding that progress in emergency preparedness and response systems further underscores the importance of coordinated regional action.
Despite these gains, he urged participants to remain focused on addressing existing gaps. According to him, the meeting should serve not only as a platform for showcasing successes but also as an opportunity to confront ongoing challenges and develop practical, forward-looking solutions.
Delegates are expected to participate in technical sessions and policy discussions throughout the meeting, with a focus on enhancing the effectiveness and transparency of WAHO’s financial support mechanisms across the ECOWAS region.
As discussions continue, attention remains on how regional cooperation and strategic investment can translate into stronger, more resilient health systems across West Africa.
