On February 19, 2026, the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MOPED) held a press conference in partnership with the Sierra Leone Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (SLANGO) to officially launch a week-long celebration in anticipation of International NGO Day on February 27.

This year’s theme, “Collaboration, Sustainability, and Local Empowerment,” reflects MOPED’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with NGOs to enhance community development across Sierra Leone. The Deputy Minister of Planning opened the conference by underscoring the vital role NGOs play in complementing government efforts to address developmental challenges.

“Our collaboration with SLANGO demonstrates our dedication to creating an enabling environment for NGOs to thrive,” he stated. “This week provides an opportunity to recognize the invaluable contributions of these organizations and align our mutual goals for sustainable development.”

During the conference, MOPED officials highlighted initiatives aimed at building the capacity of local NGOs. Strategic plans were outlined to provide technical support and resources that empower grassroots organizations, ensuring that interventions are sustainable and create lasting impact.

Throughout the week, a series of activities including workshops, outreach programs, and panel discussions will focus on sharing best practices in collaboration and local empowerment. These engagements are designed to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders, ensuring that NGO voices are integrated into policymaking processes.

MoPED’s proactive engagement during this celebratory week demonstrates its leadership in fostering an inclusive development landscape. The week will culminate on February 27 with events showcasing NGO achievements while reaffirming MoPED’s commitment to ongoing collaboration and sustainable growth in Sierra Leone.
