The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA), under the dynamic leadership of Director General Yankuba Askia Bio, is implementing significant infrastructure upgrades aimed at strengthening security and enhancing user experience at the Port of Freetown.
In a move to modernize port operations and improve safety, two major projects are currently underway: the transformation of the existing car park into an ultra-modern parking facility, and the construction of a spacious, fully equipped waiting room for visitors and port users. These projects are being expertly managed by the Ports Engineering Services Department, led by Director Lansana Sheriff.
The upgrades are strategically focused around the footbridge area—a vital access point within the port. The objective is to establish a secure, controlled environment with restricted access exclusively for authorized personnel. To this end, the SLPHA is introducing comprehensive identity verification systems and advanced surveillance technology to prevent unauthorized entry, protect assets, and ensure the safety of everyone on port premises.
The new parking facility will enable organized and secure vehicle management, while the modern waiting room will offer comfort, convenience, and improved services to business stakeholders and other port users. Together, these developments aim to enhance operational efficiency while underscoring SLPHA’s unwavering commitment to the highest standards in maritime logistics and port operations.
As the Port of Freetown continues to serve as a vital gateway for Sierra Leone’s international trade, these investments reflect SLPHA’s proactive approach to security and service delivery. Under Mr. Bio’s visionary leadership, the Authority is addressing critical infrastructure needs and reinforcing Sierra Leone’s competitiveness in global commerce.
