In a landmark address at the inaugural Korea-Africa Summit in Seoul on June 4th, 2024, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, underscored the importance of cooperation between Korea and African nations in fostering peace, sustainability, and solidarity.
President Bio expressed gratitude to His Excellency President Yoon Suk Yeol, the Government, and the people of the Republic of Korea for hosting the summit and extending enduring friendship to Sierra Leone. He emphasized the need for collective action in addressing global challenges, particularly amidst increasing conflicts and terrorist activities worldwide.
Sierra Leone, currently serving as a Non-Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council, reaffirmed its commitment to upholding international peace and security during its tenure. President Bio congratulated Korea on its third re-election to the Security Council, paving the way for enhanced collaboration between the two nations in pursuit of a more secure future.
Highlighting the urgency of UN Security Council reform, President Bio, as Chair of the African Union’s Committee of Ten on UN Security Council Reforms, pledged Sierra Leone’s dedication to advocating for a Common African position on the issue.
Acknowledging the diverse challenges facing African countries, President Bio emphasized the need for tailored solutions that recognize each nation’s unique circumstances. He emphasized the end of “armchair solutions” imposed by external actors and called for practical approaches to foster tangible and sustainable results.
President Bio also addressed the pressing issue of global food insecurity, which disproportionately affects Africa. He outlined Sierra Leone’s flagship Food Security Program, “FEED SALONE,” aimed at enhancing staple food production, reducing reliance on imports, and fostering sustainable economic growth.
Expressing gratitude for Korea’s support in addressing food security challenges, President Bio highlighted ongoing collaboration such as the K-Rice Belt Project, which complements Sierra Leone’s efforts towards self-sufficiency in food production.
President Bio concluded by reaffirming Sierra Leone’s commitment to nurturing partnerships with Korea through platforms like the Korea Africa Economic Cooperation and the Korea Africa Forum. He expressed optimism for mutual prosperity and reiterated Sierra Leone’s readiness to leverage its relationship with Korea for peace, security, and economic development.
The President’s address encapsulated Sierra Leone’s vision for a collaborative and prosperous future, grounded in mutual respect and cooperation between Korea and African nations.
