Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL), in its drive to deliver a credible and successful 2026 Population and Housing Census, officially commenced a ten-day intensive training programme for field personnel on 18th November 2025. The training serves as a key preparatory step for the forthcoming Pilot Census.

The sessions were simultaneously launched across Bombali, Kailahun, Bonthe, and the Western Area Urban Districts, marking a significant milestone in Stats SL’s national readiness efforts.

The Pilot Census scheduled for December 2025 will be conducted in Kissi Teng Chiefdom (Kailahun), Dema Chiefdom (Bonthe), Mara Chiefdom (Bombali), and Magazine and Mountain Cut (Freetown). These are the same locations where the Pilot Cartographic Mapping Exercise was recently completed.

As a crucial preparatory activity, the Pilot Census is designed to thoroughly test all major components of the census process. This includes assessing the effectiveness of the census questionnaire and digital data-collection tools; reviewing logistical and workflow arrangements; and evaluating supervisory structures and deployment strategies. The exercise will also test digital transmission systems, strengthen field protocols, and measure the effectiveness of community engagement and communication strategies.

Beyond these assessments, the Pilot Census will help identify operational gaps, refine field methodologies, and ensure that all systems function properly ahead of the nationwide census rollout in December 2026.

The ten-day training is expected to produce a highly skilled and well-prepared corps of field personnel. Enumerators will gain the competencies required for accurate and reliable data collection; supervisors will be trained to manage teams and uphold data-quality standards; technical staff will learn to troubleshoot digital devices and platforms; and field officers will be equipped to apply standardized procedures across all operational areas.

Additionally, the training aims to build field-team confidence, strengthen coordination, and deepen understanding of roles and responsibilities ensuring a smooth and efficient Pilot Census and ultimately contributing to a successful national census.

Stats SL reaffirms its commitment to delivering a national census that is credible, transparent, and reflective of Sierra Leone’s true population. The launch of this comprehensive training programme underscores the institution’s dedication to upholding international best practices and maintaining professionalism and integrity throughout the 2026 Population and Housing Census process.
