On July 2, 2025, the Sports Writer Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL) celebrated World Sports Journalist Day alongside colleagues worldwide.

Sahr Morris Junior, President of SWASAL, emphasized the significance of this year for sports journalists in Sierra Leone. He stated, “This year is particularly special as it challenges our resolve in professionalism, dedication, and ethics amidst evolving trends in our field.”

He quoted AIPS President Giannini Merlo: “We are living in a delicate, dangerous, and confusing moment in the world, with uncertainty permeating the realm of sports, which often reflects the darker aspects of politics. We must enhance our cultural understanding, both in sports and society, and adapt to new demands through our commitment to continuous improvement.”

Morris highlighted the need to evolve beyond traditional practices, acknowledging the challenges of balancing work and education in an era of 24-hour sports reporting. He emphasized the association’s focus on capacity building to meet these new demands.

As part of this year’s celebrations, SWASAL will host a capacity-building program aimed at training over 50 sports journalists in utilizing digital platforms to enhance their professional skills. This initiative will equip members with the essential tools needed to navigate the ever-changing landscape of journalism in the digital age.

Additionally, the celebration will feature a Regional Mentorship session, aimed at inspiring the next generation of sports journalists.

Morris also reminded colleagues that the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) Elective Congress is approaching. He stressed the importance of adhering to ethical standards in sports journalism, noting the SWASAL code of ethics. “We must remember that sports journalists are not football politicians, and our integrity must remain intact.”

Looking ahead, he expressed SWASAL’s eagerness to host the first-ever SLFA Presidential Candidates Debates, contingent on the candidates’ willingness to participate.

As we celebrate World Sports Journalist Day, let us reflect on our commitment to professionalism and the vital role we play in the sports community and society at large. Our dedication as sports journalists is essential, and we must always defend and uphold our profession.
