Sierra Leone Senior Female  National Team Departs For WAFU Zone A

Sierra Leone Senior Female National Team has on 19th January 2023 departed the shores of Freetown for Cape Verde ahead of the West Africa Football Union Tournament.

The team departed with 20 players plus seven Officials for the second edition of the female Football Tournament. The team has been in intensive training for the past weeks to brace up for the tournament and the players are in high spirits to explore the tournament.

Annas Solomon Halloween the head coach of the Senior Female National team said as a technical team, they selected most of the players from the Female Premier League and it is based on the merits of the selection process he said they look at the fitness of players, their strengths, composure and how best they can cope with the trends of the New Modern skills for the tournament. Noting it is never easy for them to do the selection process given they had limited time to put the squad together and prepared for such a tournament.

He further that most of the female players selected have got some international outings and they are abreast with the professional skills of the players who were scouts from the National under team and their performance in the last (U-20) qualifiers they were outstanding and the current female Premier League in the Country has to boost the players greatly, because most of them now determined to play Football compared the previous year when there was no structured female In the Country.

Coach Hallowell confirmed that as the technical team head coach we are going to the tournament to compete and not just to participate in the tournament although a lot has been said by the team, we are of the conviction that are they willing to face their counterpart in the Tournament. He added that “my nature as head coach in Football is not to participate but to compete at the highest level and that is what we are going for at this West Africa Football Union Tournament though we had limited time in preparing the team for the competition”he said.

He called on all Sierra Leoneans to pray for the team as they are going out there to represent the country on the International stage. The last time Sierra Leone Senior Females participated in an international tournament was the time they hosted the WAFU game.

The CAF Women’s WAFU Zone A set to kick off on January 20th to the 30. And eight Countries plus the host set to battle for the Trophy and medals.

2. The Gambia

3. Guinea

4. Guinea Bissau

5. Liberia

6. Mail

7. Mauritania

8. Senegal

9. Sierra Leone.

The last time the Sierra Leone Senior National team participated in the WAFU tournament was in 2019 and they came third in the group stages it was held in Sierra Leone under the then leadership of Isha Johnansen.
