In an effort to enhance national security, Minister of Information and Civic Education has mentioned in a press release that Sierra Leone’s law enforcement agencies launched a comprehensive operation targeting fugitives linked to the attempted coup on November 26, 2023.
The operation took place in the Western Area Rural District, following a year of escalating tensions and political instability in the country.
The operation was spearheaded by Captain Aiah Aba Senesie and Captain T.L. Konteh, who led their teams in a coordinated effort to apprehend the fugitives believed to be involved in undermining the government.
Security forces executed simultaneous raids in multiple locations, focusing on areas identified as strongholds for the suspects.
The crackdown was prompted by credible intelligence suggesting that the fugitives were regrouping and planning further destabilization activities.
The Ministry of Information and Civic Education emphasized the urgency of the operation to restore peace and stability, which has been fragile since the coup attempt.
During the operation, security personnel encountered resistance from the fugitives, resulting in a confrontation that led to injuries on both sides.
Authorities reported that two suspects were arrested and are now facing charges related to the coup. The injured have been provided medical assistance, underscoring the commitment of law enforcement to maintain public safety while adhering to humane practices.
The government reiterated its dedication to protecting citizens and restoring order. In a statement, officials noted, “This operation highlights our resolve to ensure that those who threaten our democracy are brought to justice.”
The Ministry of Information and Civic Education promised to keep the public informed about developments in the case as it progresses. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities that could jeopardize the stability of the nation.
As Sierra Leone moves forward, the government’s actions underscore its commitment to a secure and peaceful society, fostering trust and cooperation among its citizens while addressing threats to its democratic institutions.
