On July 3, 2025, the Government of Sierra Leone officially announced the appointment of Abdul Aziz as the country’s new Auditor-General.
The appointment was made in accordance with Section 119(1) of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone, following consultations with the Public Service Commission.
The announcement, delivered by Yusuf Keketoma Sandi, Press Secretary to President Julius Maada Bio, signals the government’s continued commitment to strengthening fiscal accountability and transparency within public institutions.
The Auditor-General plays a critical role in auditing government accounts and ensuring that public funds are managed effectively and responsibly. Aziz’s appointment comes at a time when citizens and civil society organizations are calling for greater scrutiny of government spending amid ongoing economic challenges.
Abdul Aziz’s nomination is subject to parliamentary approval, which is expected to take place in the coming weeks. His background in financial management is expected to serve him well as he assumes this key oversight role.
In a statement, Press Secretary Sandi emphasized that the appointment reflects the Bio administration’s broader effort to uphold democratic values and promote accountability in governance.
“This appointment underscores our government’s resolve to ensure public resources are managed prudently and transparently, in line with our commitment to good governance,” Sandi stated.
The government expressed hope that under Aziz’s leadership, the Office of the Auditor-General will be more effective in identifying financial irregularities, ensuring compliance with regulations, and recommending improvements in public financial management.
As the nation enters a new chapter in oversight and accountability, many stakeholders are optimistic that Aziz will bring integrity, efficiency, and positive reform to the auditing process ultimately reinforcing public trust and contributing to the sustainable development of Sierra Leone.
