Parliament has approved the appointment of Professor John Abdul Kargbo as Chairman of the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), following his appointment on 8 September 2026.

Prof. Kargbo underwent parliamentary scrutiny as part of the approval process, clearing the way for him to lead the statutory body responsible for regulating tertiary education institutions in Sierra Leone.

A distinguished academic and renowned scholar in library and information science, Prof. Kargbo is widely recognized for his contributions to the development and transformation of library and information services at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone.

He has authored more than 50 publications in library and information science journals, with expertise in records management, library education and information services. He has also demonstrated a strong commitment to combating corruption and promoting accountability.

During his appearance before Parliament’s Committee on Appointments and Public Service, Prof. Kargbo outlined his plans to address malpractice in the education sector. He pledged to work closely with the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE), tertiary institutions and other relevant stakeholders to combat educational malpractice and strengthen regulatory oversight.

His commitment comes at a time when effective regulation, institutional accountability and the protection of academic standards remain critical to the credibility and development of Sierra Leone’s tertiary education system.

Following the approval, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, congratulated Prof. Kargbo and the other newly approved appointees, reminding them of the responsibilities associated with public office.

The Speaker stressed that public appointments are temporary and urged the appointees to serve with dedication, integrity and a strong sense of responsibility, making meaningful contributions and leaving behind a lasting legacy for God and country.

Prof. Kargbo’s approval marks a significant step in the leadership of TEC. His experience in academia, library and information management, and institutional administration is expected to support the Commission’s mandate of promoting quality, accountability and excellence in tertiary education.

Stakeholders will now be looking to his leadership to strengthen regulatory compliance, address educational malpractice and improve standards across Sierra Leone’s tertiary education sector.
