NEC TO CONDUCT LOCAL COUNCIL BYE- ELECTIONS IN KENEMA, KONO

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has declared Saturday 13th November, 2021 for the conduct of Local Council bye- Elections in Ward -069 Kenema City and Ward 091 Kono District Council respectively.

 The said date was declared by the commission in exercise of the powers conferred on it by section 33 of the Constitution of Sierra Leone 1991, Act number 6 of 1991 and pursuant to Act number 4 of 2012 and section 10 of the Local Government Act 2004, Act Number 1 of 2004.

According to a letter from the Chief Administrator of the Kenema City Council dated 16th August, 2021, vacancy occurred as a result of leave of absence on the part of Alfred Ndorwa Barnette of Ward 069 who went for further studies.

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) further stated that in a letter dated August 2021 from the Chiefdom Administrator of the Kono District Council the Commission was informed of a vacancy which occurred as a result of the death of the late Councillor Tamba John Trye of Ward 091 constituency 027, Kono District, whose death took place on Sunday 28th August, 2021.

However, nomination of Candidates for the  aforesaid  Local Council elections  has been scheduled  for the 12th and 13th October, 2021 at the NEC offices at 59 Walimann Abu  Road  Kenema and  8 Gandi Fania  Street, Koidu Cities

 According to a  press release  from the  electoral  body, in accordance with statutory instrument number  13 of 2012, Candidates  nomination fee  for the  said bye  Elections  is one Million Le 1,000,000) only per candidate payable to the district returning officers at the above mentioned  addresses.

 Qualifications and disqualifications of Councillors the release said are found in section 6 of the aforementioned local Government Act 2004.
