The Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai Esq, has confirmed to the Parliament Public Account Committee that the National Sports Authority is indebted to the sum of 23 million New Leones from the Leone Stars.
This significant debt, which stems from a lack of funds, has been officially acknowledged by the Accountant General’s office in a document submitted to Parliament during the last session.
He said in order to tackle the financial shortfall, the authority secured loans from external sources, leveraging our personal properties as collateral to guarantee the team’s participation. We are committed to ensuring that once we receive the outstanding funds, the match bonuses, which were not earned by the players, will be returned promptly.
“We currently find ourselves in this challenging situation, but we are working diligently to resolve it,” he added.
Dr. Abdulai Esq alluded that Leone Stars difficulties cost them for the failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup Nations Tournament in Morocco.
