The decomposed remains of a 27-year-old man, Sahr Senesie Alie Nyakoi, commonly known as Senesie, have been discovered in a stream in Njaya Town, Nimikoro Chiefdom, Kono District, after he was reportedly missing for four days.
Speaking to our correspondent, the deceased’s mother, Finda Isata, of Kpetema Newsite in Koidu City, said her son had been staying with his wife and children in Yengema Town, Nimikoro Chiefdom, when his wife contacted her by phone at an unusual hour to report that he was behaving abnormally.
According to Madam Isata, her daughter-in-law reported that Senesie appeared distressed and claimed to be seeing snakes, strange people and other unusual things.
The mother said her son later took the phone from his wife and explained the situation to her, expressing his desire to go to a nearby mosque. However, his wife reportedly refused to accompany him.
Madam Isata said she advised her son to go to the mosque alone if his wife was unwilling to accompany him, hoping that he would find peace and comfort there.
She further explained that, according to her daughter-in-law, Senesei left Yengema for Njaya during the night while holding one of his children. During the journey, some people reportedly approached him and forcibly took the child away from him.
The incident allegedly prompted Senesei to run into a nearby mosque, where he placed a white cloth he found inside the mosque on his head and began reading the Quran.
According to his mother, after reading some portions of the Quran, her son reportedly ran out of the mosque and disappeared.
Madam Isata said that the following morning, three mobile phones her son had reportedly carried were found at different locations along the places he had visited before his disappearance.
She explained that residents of Njaya Town conducted an extensive search for her son but were unable to locate him. She later performed a ceremony and was advised to follow the route her son had taken before he disappeared.
The mother said it was while following the instructions she had received that she discovered her son’s decomposed remains in a nearby stream in Njaya Town.
Describing her son, Madam Isata said he was respectful, kind and peaceful, adding that people who had lived with him could attest to his character.
She also said her son had no known health conditions that, in her view, could explain his death. She noted that swimming and fishing had been among his hobbies since childhood, but said he had never previously experienced an incident she associated with an evil or marine spirit.
Madam Isata also dismissed rumours linking her son to cultism.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s remains were reportedly buried near the stream where they were discovered, in accordance with traditional practices.
The circumstances surrounding his disappearance and death remain unclear.
