Minister Mahoi Takes Center Stage In Common Wealth Youth-Centric Frame Work To Combat Health Challenges

The Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Isata Mahoi, took the spotlight at the launch of the Commonwealth Non-Communicable Guiding Framework in London, presenting a compelling vision for a youth-focused strategy to tackle the mounting burden of cancer and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) within the Commonwealth nations.

Addressing a distinguished audience including Her Excellencies First Ladies from Gambia and Zanzibar, the Secretary General, and High Commissioners, Dr. Mahoi expressed her delight at being part of a panel that shared experiences in addressing the rising health challenges faced by women, youth, and children.

The Minister began by extending gratitude to His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio for the honor of her appointment and nomination to participate in this pivotal event. She commended the Commonwealth for crafting a Non-Communicable Guiding Framework with a specific focus on young people, emphasizing the urgent need for action.

Highlighting the escalating burden of cancer and NCDs among women, young populations, adolescents, and children globally, Dr. Mahoi outlined key opportunities presented by the framework:Integration into National Plans:  Drawing attention to Sierra Leone’s ongoing preparation of the Medium-Term National Development Plan 2024-2028, the Minister saw a unique opportunity to integrate the framework into the country’s plans.

Youth-Led Advocacy: Stressing the power of peer-to-peer engagement, Dr. Mahoi urged the engagement of young people, both male and female, to lead advocacy campaigns against cancer and NCDs.

Political Will and Global Engagement: Advocating for strong political will, she suggested the active involvement of Heads of States to advance the agenda, proposing its inclusion in the 2024 CHOGM Samoa meeting.

Youth-Friendly Healthcare Services: The Minister emphasized the need to strengthen primary healthcare services to manage NCDs, with a focus on early identification of risk factors and ensuring these services are youth-friendly.

 Harnessing Youth Innovation: Recognizing the potential of the youthful population, Dr. Mahoi encouraged tapping into their energy for research and innovation to inform strategies in combating cancer and NCDs. Expressing appreciation for the opportunity, the Minister looked forward to receiving the framework, signaling her intent to engage with the Minister of Health and the Minister of Youth Affairs to establish robust synergies in addressing these critical health issues.
