The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security has assured workers of Marampa Mines Limited (MML) that their legal entitlements will be protected following the company’s announcement of a temporary shutdown due to economic and other challenges.
The assurance was contained in a public notice issued by the Ministry on Monday, October 26, 2026, from its office in New England Ville, Freetown.
According to the notice, the Ministry has taken note of the company’s announcement regarding the temporary suspension of its operations.
The Ministry disclosed that it had previously engaged MML management, with the involvement of the workers’ union, to explore ways of amicably addressing the challenges confronting the company.
“These engagements were aimed at taking proactive steps to protect the rights of all parties during this trying time,” the notice stated.
The Ministry further assured the public, particularly workers of Marampa Mines, that it would continue engaging the company’s management alongside the union to ensure that workers receive their lawful entitlements during the shutdown period.
It reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue with the company, stressing that it stands in solidarity with both the workforce and management as efforts continue to address the situation.
“The Ministry stands in solidarity with the workforce and management and will continue to pursue a constructive engagement with MML,” the notice concluded.
The temporary shutdown has raised concerns among workers and residents, who have called on the Government to intervene and ensure that due process is followed and that employees’ rights are upheld throughout the period.
The Ministry’s assurance comes amid growing concerns over the potential impact of the shutdown on workers’ livelihoods and the wider communities dependent on the company’s operations.
