Harry Kane scored a first-half stoppage time header as England edged New Zealand 1-0 in their World Cup warm-up friendly at Raymond James Stadium, a match played on a much-debated NFL turf and marked by fan complaints over concession prices.

The Three Lions dominated possession with 71% and registered 21 shots, but were made to work for the breakthrough. Captain Kane nodded home Djed Spence’s precise cross in the 45th+ minute to separate the sides. It was England’s only goal on a night Thomas Tuchel used to rotate his squad heavily.

In his first major test since taking charge, Tuchel fielded two entirely different lineups for each half, giving all 22 outfield players 45 minutes each. The German’s approach prioritized fitness and assessment over rhythm, though England controlled the game from start to finish. No injuries were reported despite pre-match concerns about the newly laid artificial surface, originally installed for the Buccaneers’ NFL season.

“The pitch was bumpy, that’s clear,” Tuchel admitted post-match. “But the most important thing was minutes in legs and no injuries. We created enough to score more.”

Off the pitch, the Tampa friendly drew attention for other reasons. Supporters voiced frustration over $18 large beers, $20 premium drinks, and $7.50 bottled water inside Raymond James Stadium. The venue’s iconic pirate ship added Florida flair, but could not distract from the gripes about pricing.

New Zealand, ranked well below England, defended resolutely but created few chances against Tuchel’s experimental setup. The All Whites will take lessons from the defeat as they continue their own preparations.

England’s World Cup build-up continues with a clash against Costa Rica on June 10, before their Group B opener against Croatia on June 17. Tuchel will be hoping for sharper finishing, but Kane’s header and a clean bill of health will be the main positives he takes from Tampa.
