Member of Parliament representing Kenema District, Hon. Abubakara Fonfanah, has commended President Julius Maada Bio for what he described as significant achievements during his eight years in office, while urging lawmakers to place national interest above partisan politics.
Hon. Fonfanah made the remarks on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, during the parliamentary debate on President Bio’s State Opening Address.
He acknowledged the government’s efforts in strengthening Sierra Leone’s international diplomatic relations and enhancing the country’s standing on the global stage. He particularly highlighted Sierra Leone’s membership of the United Nations Security Council and its role in regional leadership, describing them as significant diplomatic achievements worthy of national recognition.
The Kenema District lawmaker called on Members of Parliament, particularly those in the opposition, to approach the debate with objectivity and a sense of national responsibility. He stressed that the President’s address provided an opportunity for lawmakers to assess government policies and achievements while making constructive contributions to national development.
Hon. Fonfanah further emphasised that a functional democracy requires both an effective government and a responsible opposition. He noted that parliamentary scrutiny should be driven by constructive criticism, accountability and a shared commitment to national progress.
He concluded by urging lawmakers to embrace cooperation, dialogue and collective responsibility, stressing that political differences should not be allowed to undermine national unity, democratic stability and Sierra Leone’s development aspirations.
